Pack Events

Our pack calendar typically kicks off in September once school is back in session and everyone has settled into a routine. We have monthly pack-wide meetings that are focused on learning about Scouting in fun ways. This usually involves team-building games, crafts, and a little bit of high-energy mayhem. Grade-level dens meet separately as well, typically once a month.

In addition to these, the pack organizes seasonal events, including campouts in the fall and spring, the Pinewood Derby, Pack Service Days, and more. You can learn more about all these below.

Campouts

In the past we have camped at state parks and Circle 10 camps: Camp Constantin on Possum Kingdom Lake, Trevor Rees-Jones Scout Camp near Athens, Camp James Ray on Lake Texoma, and Camp Wisdom in Dallas. Our campouts are Friday-Sunday with most activities on Saturday. Many families choose to come out for only part of the campout, and that is ok. We would prefer our scouts to attend part of the campout instead of skipping it altogether. The highlight of the weekend is the Saturday night campfire, which includes ceremonies, skits, and yummy treats.

Pinewood Derby

In December we hold a derby car workshop, during which the scouts get their derby car kit and tools are provided for them to start working on their car.

Then in January the racing begins!

Raingutter Regatta

Similar to the Pinewood Derby, but simpler, and the racing vehicle is a boat. There is no prep for this event. The scouts show up for the event, and are provided some simple materials (like popsicle sticks, empty juice boxes, and other random stuff we find), and they have to make a sailboat. Then, using a fan or blowing through a straw, they race their sailboats down a chute. Traditionally, this is a raingutter (hence the event name), but we use an inflateable rubber chute that is easier to manage. And safer.

Happy Trails Hiking Club

We try to get together 4-6 times during the school year for a short hike in local nature areas: Spring Creek Nature Area, Prairie Creek Park, White Rock Creek Trail, Arbor Hills Nature Preserve, and more. These hikes are scheduled for Saturday mornings and take about an hour. We are also planning awards for scouts and/or dens that hit certain milestones.

Pack Service Days

We are committed to serving the community in meaningful ways, and do so throughout the year. This is most commonly park cleanups, but we are also working with the Canyon Creek Wetlands and Wildscape to remove invasive plants and revive the native prairie ecosystem there.

Archery Class

There is an archery school in our area that has a special program just for Cub Scouts. We try to go during once in December or January and then again each summer to escape the extreme temperatures.

Rock Climbing

Like the archery class, we like to visit a rock climbing gym a few times a year, usually at a time when it’s too hot or cold to be comfortable outside.

End-of-Summer Pool Party

Each say goodbye to summer each year by having a party at a local pool. Nothing fancy, just food, fun conversations about our summer adventures, and lots of swimming!
